UT-Battelle's Privately Funded Technology Transfer

UT-Battelle, LLC privately funds technology transfer activities for the commercialization of inventions from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). UT-Battelle has committed to spend over $3.5 million on the Privately Funded Technology Transfer (PFTT) operation as the current contractor of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This multi-million dollar commitment by UT-Battelle may include funds from the Battelle Memorial Institute, the University of Tennessee, and even by outside commercialization partners.

The Privately Funded Technology Transfer program identifies technologies with commercial promise and provides strategic plans for applications in the marketplace. Over 60 inventions have been selected for the program and have received financial support for the commercialization of the technology. These inventions may have an impact in important areas such as energy independence, health care, biotechnology, analytical instrumentation, and industrial processes.

Some of these inventions have near-term market potential; especially with a nudge from maturation funding that is offered by UT-Battelle. Privately funded maturation is available to advance the development of a technology and to provide industry with critical development outcomes for licensing the technology and developing commercial products.

UT-Battelle, LLC, was established in 2000 as a private not-for-profit company for the sole purpose of managing and operating the Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. Formed as a 50-50 limited liability partnership between the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute, UT-Battelle is the legal entity responsible delivering the Department of Energy’s research mission at Oak Ridge National Laboratory..
